Silver Falls in Winter: Ice, Mist & Solitude
Silver Falls State Park transforms in winter. The crowds vanish, the waterfalls thunder with winter runoff, and ice formations cling to the basalt cliffs. The Trail of Ten Falls is a completely different experience when frost lines the canyon walls and mist freezes mid-air.
Map & Directions
The Itinerary
South Falls Day-Use Area
Park at the plowed lot — winter parking is limited so arrive early
South Falls (Winter View)
177-foot falls with massive icicles hanging from the overhang — walk behind for a rainbowed mist curtain
Lower South Falls
Icicle-draped cliffs frame this 93-foot cascade. The stairs can be icy — traction devices recommended
Winter Falls
Living up to its name — this seasonal cascade is at its absolute peak in winter and early spring
North Falls
136-foot falls with a massive cave behind it — the echo is amplified in winter
Warm Up at South Falls Lodge
Hot cocoa, coffee, and a wood-burning fireplace to thaw out
Tips
- Traction devices (microspikes/Yaktrax) are essential — the trail gets icy
- Temperatures are 5-10°F colder in the canyon than at the parking lot
- The Rim Trail may close in icy conditions — stick to the Canyon Trail loop
- Fewer than 20 cars in the lot on a winter weekday — you'll have the falls to yourself
