Hawthorne District
Overview
Hawthorne is Portland's quintessential bohemian neighborhood. From vintage clothing stores and indie bookshops to vegan restaurants and dive bars, this stretch of SE Hawthorne Boulevard embodies the city's 'Keep Portland Weird' ethos. It's a haven for thrifters, foodies, and people-watchers. The neighborhood extends from the Willamette River up to Mount Tabor, encompassing a diverse mix of residential streets lined with Craftsman bungalows and a bustling commercial corridor.
History
Hawthorne Boulevard was named after Dr. Jabez C. Hawthorne, who settled in the area in the 1850s. The streetcar line that ran along Hawthorne made it one of Portland's earliest suburbs in the late 1800s. By the 1960s, like many American main streets, Hawthorne fell into decline as shopping malls drew business away. The low rents attracted hippies, artists, and counterculture types in the 1970s, who opened head shops, vintage stores, and cafes. This era defined Hawthorne's enduring identity as Portland's bohemian heart. The 1990s and 2000s brought a wave of acclaimed restaurants and indie retailers, cementing Hawthorne as one of Portland's most beloved destinations.
