Cathedral Park
Overview
Cathedral Park is a small, picturesque neighborhood in North Portland named for its stunning namesake park beneath the soaring gothic arches of the St. Johns Bridge. With its riverside park, historic homes, and tight-knit community, Cathedral Park feels like a riverside village within the city. It's often grouped with neighboring St. Johns, but has its own distinct character.
History
Cathedral Park was originally part of the unincorporated area that became St. Johns in the early 1900s. The neighborhood's identity was forever shaped by the completion of the St. Johns Bridge in 1931 — a stunning gothic suspension bridge designed by David B. Steinman, painted in a distinctive green hue. The park beneath the bridge's west anchorage, officially Cathedral Park, became the neighborhood's centerpiece and namesake. The park hosted the annual Cathedral Park Jazz Festival from 1981, one of the longest-running free jazz festivals in the Pacific Northwest. The neighborhood's housing stock, primarily modest Craftsman and bungalow-style homes built in the 1910s–1940s, gives it a quiet, settled character.
