Division Street Corridor
Overview
The Division Street Corridor is Portland's hottest restaurant row. From SE 11th to 50th, Division Street is packed with James Beard-recognized restaurants, innovative food carts, craft cocktail bars, and wine shops. It's the epicenter of Portland's nationally-acclaimed dining scene, where world-class chefs experiment alongside casual neighborhood joints. The corridor passes through several distinct residential areas with a mix of Craftsman bungalows and modern infill development.
History
Division Street was originally part of the Oregon Trail route — the road that settlers used to enter Portland from the east. It takes its name from being the dividing line between the Donation Land Claims of early settlers. For much of the 20th century, Division was a modest commercial corridor serving the surrounding residential neighborhoods. The transformation began in the late 1990s when chefs discovered the wide streets, cheap rents, and abundant parking. One by one, acclaimed restaurants opened — starting with Pok Pok (which put Portland's Thai food scene on the map) followed by a wave of James Bear-decorated establishments. Today, Division is arguably Portland's most important dining destination.
