Overview

The Belmont District is one of Portland's most vibrant dining and entertainment corridors. Running along SE Belmont Street from the river to Mount Tabor, this neighborhood combines a lively bar and restaurant scene with beautiful residential streets of Craftsman and Victorian homes. It's less crowded than Hawthorne but offers many of the same attractions — great food, vintage shopping, dive bars, and a genuinely local feel.

History

Belmont Street takes its name from the 1892 novel by English author Marie Corelli, reflecting the literary fashion of the era in which it was developed. The corridor grew as a streetcar suburb in the early 1900s, connecting Downtown Portland to the growing residential neighborhoods of Southeast. For much of the 20th century, Belmont was a quiet commercial street serving the surrounding homes. In the 1990s and 2000s, the area experienced a renaissance — affordable rents attracted young chefs, bar owners, and artists, transforming Belmont into one of Portland's most dynamic nightlife and dining strips. The Belmont Street Fair, held annually since 1974, is one of the city's oldest neighborhood festivals.
