Downtown Portland
Overview
Downtown Portland is the city's vibrant core — a walkable grid of towering trees, historic buildings, public squares, and a thriving food cart scene. Anchored by Pioneer Courthouse Square (Portland's 'living room'), the Downtown core is home to all five of Portland's tallest buildings, major cultural institutions like the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and Portland Art Museum, and endless shopping along the transit mall. It's where the city's energy is most concentrated.
History
Portland's Downtown was platted in 1845 by Asa Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove (who famously won a coin toss to name the city). The original 16-block Downtown grew rapidly during the 1850s gold rush, when Portland became the primary port and supply hub for the California and Oregon gold fields. The 1905 Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition sparked a building boom that gave Downtown many of its grand Beaux-Arts buildings. After a mid-century decline when suburban shopping malls drew business away, Downtown reinvented itself in the 1970s–90s with the Pioneer Courthouse Square project, light rail (MAX), and a focus on pedestrian-friendly urbanism. Today it's a model of Downtown revitalization.
