Lloyd District
Overview
The Lloyd District is Portland's second downtown — a dense, transit-oriented urban center east of the Willamette River. Home to the Oregon Convention Center, Moda Center (where the Trail Blazers play), and the Lloyd Center mall, it's Portland's premier events and entertainment district. The neighborhood is undergoing a massive transformation, with office buildings being converted to housing and a new focus on creating a walkable, livable urban neighborhood.
History
The Lloyd District was developed in the 1950s and 1960s as Portland's first suburban-style shopping and office district, anchored by the Lloyd Center mall (1960) — one of the first enclosed shopping malls in the United States. Named for Ralph Lloyd, a wealthy oilman who developed the area, the district grew to include the Oregon Convention Center (1990), the Moda Center (1995, originally the Rose Garden), and numerous office towers. The MAX light rail system, with its Lloyd Center and Convention Center stations, has made the district one of Portland's most transit-connected neighborhoods. In the 2020s, major redevelopment projects are transforming the area from a single-use business district into a mixed-use urban neighborhood.
