History
Multnomah was originally an independent city, incorporated in 1911. It was built around the Oregon Electric Railway line that connected it to downtown Portland. The village center developed along Capitol Highway, with a mix of commercial buildings, a library, and a city hall. Multnomah was annexed by Portland in 1950, but its downtown retained the character of a small-town main street. The neighborhood's central gathering spot, the Multnomah Library, was built in 1913 with Carnegie funding and remains a community anchor. In the 1990s and 2000s, the village became a destination for its concentration of antique shops, earning it the nickname 'Antique Row.'
