Overlook

North Portland
Best For: Craft beer lovers, skyline views, active commuters
Walkability: 74%

Overview

Overlook is a North Portland neighborhood with one of the best skyline views in the city, anchored by Overlook Park's sweeping views of the Fremont Bridge and Downtown. The neighborhood's main commercial corridor on N Interstate Avenue has blossomed into a destination for craft beer, cider, and creative dining, while the surrounding streets offer a mix of Craftsman bungalows and modern infill.

History

Overlook was named for its position on a bluff overlooking the Willamette River, offering panoramic views of Downtown and the Fremont Bridge. The area was developed in the early 1900s as a streetcar suburb along the Interstate Avenue line. For much of the 20th century, Interstate Avenue was a highway commercial corridor, part of US 99. The neighborhood went through a significant transition after the MAX Yellow Line light rail opened in 2004, bringing new investment. The NCC (Northwest College of Construction) redevelopment and the rise of the Interstate Avenue craft beer scene have made Overlook a destination in its own right.
