Overview

Alameda is a prestigious Northeast Portland neighborhood perched on a ridge with stunning views of the Cascades, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Hood. It's one of Portland's most beautiful residential neighborhoods, with a remarkable collection of early 20th-century homes lining its winding, tree-shaded streets. The neighborhood is quiet, family-oriented, and fiercely protective of its historic character.

History

Alameda was developed in the early 1900s by the Alameda Land Company, who laid out the first subdivisions on the ridge overlooking the Columbia River. The neighborhood's location on a basalt bluff gave it natural advantages — cool breezes in summer, panoramic views, and separation from the industrial development below. Alameda's developers marketed it as Portland's most exclusive address, and its housing stock reflects that ambition: a stunning array of Craftsman, Colonial Revival, Tudor, and Mediterranean-style homes built between 1905 and 1940. The neighborhood was one of the first in Portland to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district.
