Overview

The Hollywood District is a historic neighborhood centered on the iconic Hollywood Theatre, a 1926 movie palace that anchors a lively walkable commercial strip. Named for the original Hollywood neighborhood in Los Angeles, this Northeast Portland district combines vintage charm with a modern food and drink scene. It's a quieter, more residential alternative to the Alberta Arts District, with tree-lined streets and a strong sense of community.

History

The Hollywood District was developed in the early 1910s as a streetcar suburb, with the Hollywood Theatre opening in 1926 as a single-screen movie house designed by renowned architect John Eberson. The theater gave the neighborhood its name, borrowed from the film capital. For decades, Sandy Boulevard served as a major highway (US 30) connecting Portland to the Columbia River Gorge, giving the district a roadside commercial character. After a period of decline when multiplexes and suburban shopping drew audiences away, the Hollywood Theatre was restored and reopened as a nonprofit art house cinema. The surrounding district has since revitalized with breweries, restaurants, and independent shops moving into the historic storefronts.
