History
Irvington was platted in 1887 by the Irvington Land Company, named after Washington Irving. The neighborhood developed rapidly after the 1890s, attracting Portland's business and civic elite who built grand homes along tree-lined boulevards. The Irvington Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserves over 1,500 contributing structures spanning Queen Anne, Craftsman, Colonial Revival, and Tudor styles. The neighborhood's most famous resident was Dr. John D. Carroll, a prominent physician whose 1909 mansion now serves as the Waverley Country Club's Irvington clubhouse. The neighborhood successfully fought off freeway construction in the 1950s and 60s, preserving its historic character.
